Sergey Brin is a Russian-born American computer scientist and entrepreneur, who is best known as the co-founder of Google, the world’s largest and most popular search engine.
Brin was born on August 21, 1973, in Moscow, Soviet Union (now Russia) to a family of Russian Jewish descent. His father, Mikhail Brin, is a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland, and his mother, Eugenia Brin, is a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
In 1979, when Brin was 6 years old, his family immigrated to the United States. They settled in Adelphi, Maryland, where Brin’s father took a position as a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland. Brin attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland and graduated in 1991.
In 1993, Brin enrolled at Stanford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in the same field. While at Stanford, Brin met Larry Page, and the two began working on a research project that eventually became Google. They wrote a paper describing their proposed search engine, which they called “Backrub.” The paper was titled “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine.”
In 1998, Brin and Page incorporated Google, which quickly grew to become the dominant search engine on the internet. As of today, Google processes more than 3.5 billion searches per day and is one of the most valuable companies in the world.
In addition to his work at Google, Brin is also involved in several philanthropic and investment endeavors. He is a co-founder of the non-profit organization Google.org, which focuses on using technology to address global issues such as poverty and climate change. He is also a major investor in several technology companies through his investment firm, Google Ventures.
In December 2020, Brin stepped down from his role as President of Alphabet and Google, the parent company of Google. He continues to serve on the board of directors of Alphabet and Google.
Brin is also known for his philanthropy. In 2008, he and his wife, Anne Wojcicki, donated $15 million to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. He is also an active supporter of the XPRIZE Foundation and The Planetary Society.
In his personal life, Brin was married to Anne Wojcicki, a biotechnology analyst, from 2007 to 2015, the couple have two children together.
