Sunita Williams is an American astronaut and former NASA astronaut. She was born in Euclid, Ohio in 1965. She is of Indian-Slovenian descent. She graduated from Needham High School in Needham, Massachusetts in 1983 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy in 1987 and a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.

Williams began her career as a naval test pilot, and later served as a helicopter pilot in the United States Navy. In 1998, she was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate and completed astronaut training in 2000.

She has spent a total of 322 days in space, including a 195-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2006 and 2007, where she held the record for the longest spaceflight by a female astronaut at that time, as well as for the most spacewalks (four) by a female astronaut. In 2012, she served as a flight engineer on the ISS for Expedition 33, and became the commander of Expedition 33.

Throughout her career, she has received several awards, such as the NASA Space Flight Medal, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal. After her retirement from NASA in 2012, she continues to be actively involved in technology and innovation and work as a speaker and mentor.
