Nirala was a genius. Apart from being a poet, he was a novelist, a story writer, an essayist and a critic. Nirala is considered to be a pillar of modem literature. He put a lot of variety in his poetry. He has covered subjects like love, beauty, suspense, and nationalism. He strongly wrote against exploitation. His writings clearly show his concern for the downtrodden. He is called the ‘revolutionary poet’ of Hindi. He is also known as `Mahadi’.
His notable works are Anamika, Tulsidas, Parimal, Geetika, Bela, Naye Pane, Apsara, Nirupama, Juhi ki Kali and Ram ki Bhakti Pooja. All these are immortal compositions.
Nirala was born in Mahishadal in West Bengal. He studied Bengali, Sanskrit, and English. He had a deep knowledge of the Vedas also and he also edited Savanmaya. He was a philosopher poet and connoisseur of music also. However, his whole life was full of difficulties. He died at 64.
He was a carefree person. Very rarely one comes across such a personality in a poet. He passed his last days in a precarious condition.
