Tansen (also known as Tanna Mishra or Ramtanu Pandey) was a prominent Indian musician and one of the nine gems of the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar. He is considered one of the greatest musicians in Indian classical music and has a significant place in the history of Indian music. Tansen was born in a Hindu family in Behat, Gwalior, in present-day Madhya Pradesh, India. He was a student of the famous musician and saint, Swami Haridas.

Tansen was a versatile musician and was proficient in singing, playing various instruments such as Veena and Surbahar, and also in composing music. He was known for his extraordinary vocal range and his ability to evoke emotions with his music. He was particularly renowned for his ability to sing raags such as Deepak, Megh, and Miya ki Malhar, which were believed to have the power to light lamps and bring rain respectively.

Tansen was also known for his mastery of Dhrupad, a form of Hindustani classical music which was considered to be the oldest form of Indian classical music. He was also an accomplished poet and composed many songs in the Dhrupad style.

Tansen was an important court musician of Akbar, the Mughal Emperor of India and was one of the most prominent members of Akbar’s “Navaratnas” (nine gems) which included poets, warriors, philosophers, and other skilled men at the Mughal court. He died in 1586 and is still widely considered to be one of the greatest musicians in Indian history. Tansen’s music and life continue to be celebrated through music festivals and events such as Tansen Music Festival and Tansen Samaroh, which are held annually in his hometown Gwalior in his honor.
