The chief organizer of the fight against the British in Bihar
|
Thakur Kanwar Singh had the rare distinction of leading his forces as a General during the 1857 first war of independence when he was 75. In fact, he had already reached ripe old age when he started taking part in political activities but with his zeal and quickness, he had become a model for youth. The revolt in Danapur, Bihar started with his inspiration. He organized the national rebels, attacked Aara, and conquered it.
British efforts to recapture Aara were thwarted by Thakur Kanwar Singh’s brave defiance. The British received a massive setback when the Indian forces captured a large portion of Bihar including Jagdishpur and Azamgarh. When a British major attacked his kingdom of Jagdishpur, Kanwar Singh repulsed the attackers.
It would not be an exaggeration to state that then Bihar had no other freedom fighter of the caliber of Kanwar Singh. After a couple of days, the English forces attacked Jagdishpur once again. During the siege, when the English forces were shelling and bombarding Jagdishpur, Kanwar Singh was wounded but that did not deter him. He just amputated his wounded right arm and threw it in the Gangas. This rare example of bravery was instrumental in his gaining a victory over the. British once again.
Kanwar Singh ascended the throne of Jagdishpur after the death of his father. The title ‘Raja’ was conferred on him. Although he had all the qualities of a brave soldier since his youth, they remained dormant till he came into contact with Nana Saheb Peshwa. Once his zeal to fight for a cause was awakened, there was no looking back, nor could his advanced age be an obstacle. Thakur Kanwar Singh is remembered with great reverence among the freedom fighters of Bihar. He was the one who worked hard to make the freedom struggle a success.
