Tulsidas was a 16th-century Indian poet-saint and philosopher, best known for writing the Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Hindu epic Ramayana in the vernacular language of Awadhi. He was born on 1497 in Rajpur, a small village in the present-day district of Banda, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Tulsidas had a profound devotion to Lord Rama, an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu and was inspired to write the Ramcharitmanas as a means to bring the story of Rama to a wider audience, particularly to those who did not have access to or were not able to read the original text in Sanskrit.

The Ramcharitmanas, written in a form of verse called “chaupai”, is widely considered to be one of the greatest works of Hindi literature and is still widely read and recited today. The work is considered as an important source for understanding the bhakti movement in medieval India.

Tulsidas’s style of writing and his deep devotion to Lord Rama, combined with his use of simple and understandable language, made the Ramcharitmanas immensely popular among the common people and it is still widely read and recited, particularly during the Hindu festival of Ram Navami.

Tulsidas is also credited with several other works such as Vinaya Patrika, Kavitavali, and Gitavali. He passed away in 1623, and is considered to be one of the greatest saints and poet of North India and his works are still widely read and respected.
