Compare the antagonistic functions of the following three pairs of hormones in the human body:
Explain the relationship between the hindbrain and the function of control of the breathing mechanism.
Antagonistic Functions of Hormone Pairs
| Hormone Pair | Function of Hormone A | Function of Hormone B |
|---|---|---|
| Insulin (A) & Glucagon (B) | Insulin decreases blood sugar | Glucagon raises blood sugar |
| Estrogen (A) & Progesterone (B) | Estrogen stimulates female sexual characteristics and egg maturation | Progesterone prepares uterus for pregnancy and inhibits further ovulation |
| FSH (A) & LH (B) | FSH stimulates egg and sperm formation | LH triggers ovulation and maintains corpus luteum |
Relationship of Hindbrain and Breathing Mechanism
The hindbrain, especially the medulla oblongata, contains the respiratory center. This center regulates and controls the rhythm and depth of breathing by sending impulses to the muscles of respiration.
