QQuestion

Explain the following two methods of asexual reproduction:

  • (a) Budding
  • (b) Regeneration

Exam-ready answer 02 Mark

Answer

(a) Budding: In budding, one or more small outgrowths or buds are formed on the parent body. Each bud enlarges, assumes the characteristics of the parent, then separates and develops into a new individual; this is seen in Yeast and Hydra.

(b) Regeneration: In regeneration, the body of an organism breaks into several parts and each part develops into a new animal through cell division; this is seen in Planaria due to the presence of pluripotent stem cells.
