Lala Lajpat Rai, also known as “Punjab Kesari” (Lion of Punjab), was an Indian independence activist, political leader, and journalist from Punjab region. He was born on January 28, 1865, in Dhudike, Punjab, British India (now in Punjab, India).
Lajpat Rai was a highly educated man, he studied in Lahore, London and United States and qualified as a lawyer. He joined the Indian National Congress and quickly emerged as a prominent leader of the Indian independence movement. He was an advocate of the use of peaceful protests, civil disobedience and non-cooperation to achieve political goals, similar to Mahatma Gandhi.
He was an avid journalist and he founded and edited several newspapers, including the Arya Gazette and the Hindi-language newspaper, Bande Mataram, which were instrumental in spreading his ideas and building support for the Indian independence movement.
Lajpat Rai was a strong advocate for the rights of the Indian people and he fought against British colonial rule, as well as caste and communal discrimination. He played a key role in the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1920-22 and the Swaraj Movement, he was also one of the leaders of the Simon Commission Protest.
In 1928, Lajpat Rai was severely injured during a peaceful protest against the Simon Commission and died from his injuries on November 17, 1928. His death generated widespread protests and civil unrest across India, and he became an iconic figure and a symbol of resistance for the Indian independence movement.
