Akbar ranks among the greatest rulers in the history of the world. He is the real founder of the Moghul Empire in India. During the entire medieval period, Akbar was the only ruler who strived for secularism in the country. Akbar succeeded to the throne on 14 February 1556, at the age of only 13 years. Akbar gained his first major victory in the Second Battle of Panipat (1556). Akbar’s other notable conquests are Malwa (1562); Gujarat (1573); Kabul (1581) and Kashmir (1586). Akbar had divided his kingdom into 15 provinces. Akbar followed a secular policy towards the Rajputs and married a Rajput princess Jodha Bai, daughter of Raja Bihar Mal of Amber.
Akbar followed a policy of religious tolerance and brotherhood. In 1563, he abolished the pilgrims’ tax, and in 1564, Jazia on Hindu subjects. He also founded a universal religion called Din-e-Elahi for the religious unity of his empire which contained good points of all the major religions. In 1575, Akbar built an lbadat Khana (House of Worship) at his capital Fatehpur Sikri which was opened to followers of all religions. Akbar also showed a tremendous interest in the development of art, literature, and architecture. Many famous literary works and architectures in India belong to Akbar’s reign. He also patronized Navratnas or nine gems (the most talented men of their times) in his court. Tansen, the legendary musician, was one of these Navratnas.
Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar was born on 15th October 1542, in Amarkot. At the time of his birth, his father Humayun had lost his empire in India. Akbar was not much educated but he became highly skilled in martial art. He was enthroned on 24th January 1556, and the same year he demonstrated his military skill by gaining victory in the Second Battle of Panipat.
Akbar died on 17th October 1605.
