As the unquestioned leader of the depressed classes and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, the name of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar will always be remembered in Indian history. He was the main inspiration behind the inclusion of special provisions in the Constitution of India for the development of scheduled caste people. Dr. Ambedkar played a key role in the preparation of the Indian Constitution. Dr. Ambedkar was the Law Minister of India from 1947 to 1951. During 1942 -194 Vie also served as the Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council, and from 1926 to 1934 he was a nominated member of the Bombay Legislative Council. He attended the Round Table Conferences in London as a representative of the depressed classes of India. Dr. Ambedkar also took part in the Satyagraha of untouchables at Nasik in 1930 for opening the Hindu temples to them. For hitting at the con-science of the orthodox Hindus, Dr. Ambedkar together with his 2 lakh followers embraced Buddhism on 14 October 1956.

Bhiinrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on 14th April 1893, in a very poor untouchable family in Madhya Pradesh. Being an untouchable, the young Ambedkar had to face all the indignities suffered by the rest of the members of his class. The then ruler of Baroda was highly impressed with his talents and he helped Ambedkar to travel to the U.S.A. for higher studies. In the U.S.A., he did his M.A. in 1915 and Ph.D. in 1916. From 1918 to 1920, Dr. Ambedkar was also a Professor of law. In 1925, Dr. Ambedkar set up his legal practice at the Bombay High Court.

This widely learned man and liberator of the downtrodden passed away on 6th December 1956.
