Dr. M.S. Swaminathan is an Indian geneticist and international administrator who is widely regarded as the “Father of the Green Revolution in India.” He was born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. He received his early education in Kumbakonam and Thanjavur before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in genetics and plant breeding from the University of Madras in 1943. He then received a Master of Science degree in genetics and cytology from the University of Mysore in 1946, and a Ph.D. in genetics and cytology from the University of Cambridge in England in 1952.

After completing his education, Dr. Swaminathan returned to India and began working as a plant geneticist at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi. In 1960, he was appointed the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, where he played a key role in the development of high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice that greatly increased agriculture production in India. This effort was later known as the Green Revolution.

In 1966, Dr. Swaminathan founded and became the first Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, where he helped to develop new strains of rice that were resistant to pests and diseases, and that could grow in a wide range of environments. He also helped to establish similar research institutions in other developing countries.

In 1969, Dr. Swaminathan was appointed the first Director of the World Food Programme, an organization that was established by the United Nations to help combat hunger and malnutrition around the world. He served in this role for five years, during which he oversaw the distribution of food aid to millions of people in developing countries.

After leaving the World Food Programme, Dr. Swaminathan returned to India, where he continued to work on issues related to agricultural development and food security. He has served on the boards of several international organizations and has received numerous awards for his work, including the World Food Prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Vibhushan.

Dr.Swaminathan is also known for his strong advocacy in sustainable agricultural practices and biotechnology, he is known for his concept of Evergreen Revolution, which stresses on providing enough food for all, while preserving the environment and natural resources.

Dr. Swaminathan is still active in various programs and initiatives towards sustainable agricultural development and hunger eradication, he is currently the Chairman of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) which is working on research, education and advocacy on sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and livelihood security.
