Jñāneśwar (also known as Jñānadeva or Jñāneśvar) was a 13th-century Marathi sant, poet, philosopher and yogi of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra, India. He is considered as one of the most important saints in the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. His name Jñāneśwar means “Jñāna’s Lord” or “Master of Wisdom”

Jñāneśwar was born in 1275 AD in a town called Alandi, near Pune in Maharashtra, India. He was the youngest of the four children of Vithalpant and Rukmini. He was trained in spiritual and scholarly pursuits by his father and older brother, Nivritti.

Jñāneśwar is best known for his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, known as the Jñāneśvarī, which is considered one of the greatest works of Marathi literature. His other works include the Amritanubhav and the Changdev Pasashti.

Jñāneśwar’s teachings emphasized the importance of devotion (bhakti) to God, the unity of all beings, and the path of devotion and self-surrender as the highest path to liberation. He also emphasized the importance of living a simple, austere life, and being of service to others.

Jñāneśwar passed away in 1296 AD at the young age of 21. His tomb, the Samadhi mandir, at Alandi is a popular pilgrimage spot. His teachings have had a profound influence on Marathi culture and the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. He is considered as one of the most prominent saint in Maharashtra and his literature and teachings are still popular and widely read.
