Maharaja Ranjit Singh, also known as Sher-e-Punjab (Lion of Punjab) was a Punjabi Sikh ruler and the founder of the Sikh Empire, which existed in the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early 19th century. He was born on November 13, 1780, in Gujranwala, Punjab, India (now Pakistan).
Ranjit Singh was the son of Maha Singh, the leader of the Sukerchakia misl, a confederacy of Sikh warrior bands. At a young age, he began to build his own military force and extended his control over various regions of Punjab.
Ranjit Singh gradually unified the various Sikh misls under his own command and established himself as the dominant power in the region. He captured Lahore in 1799 and declared himself as the Maharaja of Punjab in 1801.
During his reign, he implemented a number of economic and administrative reforms, and he made a concerted effort to create a strong and centralized government. He also fostered cultural, artistic and religious tolerance, he employed people from different religions, castes and background, many of his generals were Muslims and Hindus.
Ranjit Singh was a skilled military leader and expanded the Sikh Empire through a series of conquests, he fought several wars against the Afghans and the British, and he was able to maintain the independence of his empire for several decades.
Ranjit Singh died on June 27, 1839. His death marked the beginning of the decline of the Sikh Empire, his empire was eventually conquered and annexed by the British East India Company in 1849.
