Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha, commonly known as P. T. Usha, is a former Indian track and field athlete from the state of Kerala, who was born on June 27, 1964, in the village of Payyoli, Kerala, India. She is considered one of the greatest Indian athletes of all time and has achieved many notable accomplishments in her career.
Usha began competing in athletics at a young age and quickly made a name for herself as a talented sprinter and long jumper. She won her first national title in 1979 at the Junior National Championships and went on to win numerous national and international titles throughout her career.
In 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games, she narrowly missed a bronze medal in 400m hurdles by 1/100th of a second, which was considered as the closest ever missed medal in Olympic history. She also represented India in the 1986 Asian Games, where she won five gold medals, setting a new Asian record in the process.
Usha is a recipient of several awards for her contribution to Indian sports, including the Padma Shri in 1985 and the Arjuna award in 1983. She retired from active competition in 2000 and has since worked as a coach and sports administrator in India. In 2012, she opened the Usha School of Athletics in Koyilandy, Kerala, to nurture young talents in track and field.
