Sunil Manohar Gavaskar, commonly known as Sunil Gavaskar, is a former Indian cricketer who was born on July 10, 1949, in Bombay, India (now Mumbai). He is considered one of the greatest opening batsmen in the history of cricket, and has achieved many notable accomplishments in his career.
Gavaskar began playing cricket at a young age and made his debut for the Indian national team in 1971. He quickly established himself as one of the best opening batsmen in the world, and holds several records for his performances in the game. He was the first player to score 10,000 Test runs, in 1984 and was the first player to score centuries in both innings of a Test match three times. He also holds the record for most Test runs scored without a century.
Gavaskar captained the Indian team in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and is credited with helping to improve the team’s performance. He retired from international cricket in 1987, but continued to play in domestic cricket and in exhibition matches until the late 1990s. After his retirement, he served as a commentator and cricket analyst, and also wrote several books on cricket.
Gavaskar has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Indian cricket, including the Padma Bhushan in 1980 and the Padma Shri in 1983 by Government of India. He was also inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.
