Fertilization is the process of fusion between male and female gametes, resulting in the formation of a zygote, which develops into a new individual.
Process of Fertilization in Plants:
- Pollination: Pollen grains (male gametes) from the anther land on the stigma (female part).
- Germination: Pollen tube grows from the stigma to the ovary.
- Fusion: Sperm (male gamete) travels through the pollen tube and fuses with the egg (female gamete) inside the ovule.
- Zygote Formation: The fertilized egg becomes a zygote, which develops into an embryo.
- Seed Formation: The ovule develops into a seed, containing the embryo and stored food.
- Fruit Formation: The ovary enlarges and becomes a fruit, protecting the seeds.
